The economy of Madhya Pradesh is based substantially on its
diverse agriculture and about 80% of the population depends on it. Main crops of the state
are Soyabean, Pulses, Paddy and wheat. About 88% of the total national production of
soyabean is produced in M. P. Total Soyabean production in 1997-98 was 4.028 million
metric tons. Madhya Pradesh also excels in the production of pulse, lentils, gram,
linseed, ramtil etc. Total pulse production in 1997-98 was 3.225 million metric tons . 22%
of the total agricultural land is used for paddy production. Eastern M. P. is the main
area for paddy production. Total paddy production in 1997-98 was 6.388 million metric tons
. Wheat is another major crop produced in Western M. P. in the Rabi season. Total wheat
production in 1997-98 was 7.366 million metric tons . MAIN CROPS OF MADHYA PRADESH
